Why I built Dots
I have started and abandoned a lot of habit trackers. Every one of them wanted more than I was willing to give: an account, a subscription, a daily check-in, a streak counter that turned one missed evening into a reason to quit. After deleting the fourth one I stopped looking for the right app and built the thing I actually wanted.
It began as a single screen. A year of small squares, one tap to fill one in. I used it every day for months before it had a name. The rules came from how I actually live: it had to work on a plane and in the metro, so there is no account and no server. It had to survive a missed week without making me feel bad, so there is no streak shaming. And it had to be quick enough to use while the kettle boils, so logging is one tap and nothing else.
After a while the calendar filled up with colour and I started seeing things I had missed. Which months I read. When I quietly stopped running. How rarely I called my parents. That was when I decided to put it on the App Store instead of keeping it on my own phone. Dots is still the app I open every evening, and the free version is the same one I used for a year before Pro existed.
